Arizona is light years ahead of Tennessee, on issues involving Illegal Immigration (being a border state is only part of the reason; more significant is that Arizona Citizens are allowed to have Voter Referendums, AKA Ballot Propositions, or Direct Democracy).

Proposition 200 was voted into law in November 2004, and mandated proof of citizenship requirements for peeps registering to vote, and that Registered Voters then show ID at the polls. Tennessee just recently shot that 'Proof of ID' idea down in the State joke Legislature.

Of course, the new Arizona law was challenged. It's hard enough to get effective laws voted in at any State Legislature, without challenge, much less (gasp) a Citizen Referendum. Those tend to frighten the moonbat special-interest groups and their lawyers out of their caves like a squealing Sheryl Crow drives Karl Rove away from a dinner table (I'll bet she couldn't do that with Michael Moore, but then again, she would probably sit in his lap, and squeal herself...)

But, the 9th Circuit (that grotto in San Francisco is not known for such level-headed decisions, so this one is a surprise to many) upheld the law...
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Friday that Arizona can continue requiring people to prove citizenship when they register to vote.

The Appeals Court said there was insufficient evidence that the law severely burdens the right to vote or amounts to a "poll tax." Secretary of State Jan Brewer called the decision a victory for states' rights and for voters. "The people have spoken, and this is what they want in the state of Arizona," she said.
The ID requirement for voting at the polls went into effect just this March.

So, to our well-lobbied friends in the Tennessee Legislature, why not look west and see what you too can do, if you would just get off the dance floor...
