The ‘Fred Factor’: or, do Republicans want to win in '08, or get ready for 4-8 years of acting like Democrats?
Posted by kotang at 3:48 AMZach Wamp, co-author of the soon-to-be-released book The Fred Factor, finally says what we all know: if Fred Thompson doesn't run in 2008, Republicans are going to lose the election. Big-time.
Last week's VP debate proved to me there is no outstanding candidate I would consider even VP material. Giuliani? Sorry, not conservative. Gun Controller in New York City as Mayor. Wacky love life. Mitt Romney? He's a Mormon (not that there's anything wrong with that, but it is a cult) and has some wacky views. John McCain? You think I'm a little loose-cannonish? He needs an attached team of handlers to keep him in line. Bombs out frequently. The other 5 candidates at the debate? Who? No way they will get any votes from what Gill says is the important vote bloc the Republicans have to have to compete for...
Which, from a standpoint of Democrats, is exactly what they've been doing for 8 years, or more. The balance in this country is centered, or should be, but to give up without even putting up a good fight isn't even sporting.
So, Fred, for the sake of what's left of the Republican Party, you have to stand up and run. And you might have some fun with it; remember what Ronnie said?
“The ‘Fred Factor’ is the factor of our party having a shot of winning the White House despite the odds,” Wamp said. “The next President of the United States must rise above the division in the United States to bring our country together and unify us around an agenda to meet the challenges of the next generation."That's spot on, Zach, and deserving of hilighting and frequent repetition, because it's the only bit of reality I've heard that resonates with me concerning this upcoming elective debacle.
“We need to nominate someone like Fred who can speak to the independents and bring Reagan Democrats back to our party, and reach over into a base that we frankly lost in the last election. We only held the hardcore Republicans in this country last fall...”

“You’ve got to bring back those Reagan blue-collar Democrats in Michigan, in Pennsylvania, in Ohio and in Wisconsin to counter what I still think is going to be Hillary Clinton at the top of the Democratic ticket,”So, if this little 200-page paperback doesn't kickstart Fred's campaign, we can look forward to assuming the position of opposition to some bad liberal policies for the next 8 or so years.
