So, the guy wasn't so much an Obama fan. But, was he 'just' a guy out hunting lib'ruls? Not so much.

From my Knoxville 'sources', JA had prior history at this Church. He blamed his divorce on his ex-wife's increasing involvement in this Church (that they both had attended). So, the Church wasn't selected 'just because' it had lib/progg members; JA had prior involvement. If he attended in the past, maybe he was a lib/progg who had blame issues. Who knows? Who cares?

It's difficult to assign reason to a madman. This unhinged individual should be tried, and if convicted, allowed to achieve what he set out to accomplish: death because of his own deranged actions.

What I wrote was obviously not that Christians are on anyone's 'hate crime list', nor even should they be. That 'list' is reserved for and populated by the crying whiners on the left, like you, who needs to manufacture a separate identity and politicize that identity; identity politics that robs our country of unity and breeds divisiveness. I'm not 'against' gays, lesbians, or any other person, as long as they are not of the 'in your face' crowd. Civil unions, I'm all for those. Start calling it 'marriage', that's crossing the line. Marriage is a man and a woman, maybe with a child. If a liberal wants to abort their children, that's their lifetime of wondering. If gays want to live together and share insurance benefits, sure, fine, call it a civil union. But don't trample what little value marriage has left with your doggystyle perversions.

Robert Hawkins ignored that little sign, didn't he?

Just look at this freak. Like the VT killer Cho Seung-Hui, Hawkins didn't get the mental help he needed. Unlike Cho, Hawkins spent time in facilities, was actually declared a "ward of the State", but was released in August 2006. Here's the quote that really, really bothers me...

On Aug. 21, 2006, he was released from state custody.

Under state law, Landry said, wards are released when all sides - parents, courts, social workers - agree it is time for them to go. Once Hawkins was set free, he was entirely on his own. He was no longer under state supervision, and was not released into anyone's custody.

"When our role is ended, we try to step out," said Chris Peterson, director of the [Nebraska] state Department of Health and Human Services. (emboldenings mine)

So, you stepped away, Peterson, before the kid was 'healed'; you didn't look back. I'll bet you're gonna look back quite a bit in the next few years...

But I'm getting ahead of myself, here. I want to look closer at exactly what happened .

Wednesday, this sick punk steps off the 3rd floor of Von Maur department store in Westroads Mall in Omaha, Nebraska, and opens up with a stolen AK-47.

He steps off the elevator on the 3rd floor and randomly kills 6 employees and two customers...

The shoppers that Hawkins killed were Gary Scharf, 48, of Lincoln, and John McDonald, 65, of Council Bluffs, Iowa. The employees killed were Angie Schuster, 36; Maggie Webb, 24; Janet Jorgensen, 66; Diane Trent, 53; Gary Joy, 56; and Beverly Flynn, 47, all of Omaha.

Also injured and wounded were five of whom were in critical condition (no word yet on whether they will live.)

Then the crazy son of a bitch shoots himself.

So, where are we going to go with this?

As I said after the Cho business, we have to make mental health more of a State issue. We have to make sure that anyone who threatens to kill others (Hawkins threatened to kill his stepmother) and/or him or herself gets sufficient dosage or treatment. Cho was prescribed treatment and drugs; he ignored both. This crazed f**cker spent four years in treatment, foster care, drug rehab, whatever, and was still released without any follow-up because "When our role is ended, we try to step out".

Step out, without finishing your work? Step away, and allow some crazed Psycho loony toon to randomly kill innocents in a Shopping Mall, right here at Christmas? When the economy is already in a bad mood?

There is no answer to this that's satisfying to me.

The kid left a note saying he was going to "die famously".

Well, I'll do my part to make sure his remembrance is anything but 'famous'.

The reason she had to leave jail last week?

Paris Hilton was so terrified guards would snap a cell-phone picture of her on the toilet that she didn't eat or drink for three days, which left her facing a life-threatening collapse, a source told the Daily News. She also was not taking prescribed medication while in jail, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca said.

Hmmmph. If a person wants to hunger strike, then they can go for days without eating, before a court orders a tube inserted down their throats for feeding (I think there's internet video proving Paris' been there...)

There is some hope for Miss Priss, if this quote is really hers, and not a lawyer's feed...

"I would hope going forward that the public and the media will focus on more important things like the men and women serving our country in Iraq and other places around the world," she said.

Two days ago, April 17, Cho Seung-Hui went from being just a "Question Mark Kid" to another, the most recent, deadly mass killer in the US. We're finding out that people knew he was 'crazy', talked about his problems amongst themselves at VT, read his writings, and that Cho even had some level of 'commitment' in Radford. Lots of bzzz, bzzzz, bzzzz, but you know what?

Completely Ineffective. It didn't work. People died, because of...what?

We see the complete failure of our mental-health 'saftey net'.

"A court found that Virginia Tech killer Seung-Hui Cho was "mentally ill" and potentially dangerous. Then it let him go.

"In December 2005 -- more than a year before Monday's mass shootings -- a district court in Montgomery County, Va., ruled that Cho presented "an imminent danger to self or others." That was the necessary criterion for a detention order, so that Cho, who had been accused of stalking by two female schoolmates, could be evaluated by a state doctor and ordered to undergo outpatient care."

Outpatient care. That's known as 'managed care', and means, still on the streets. There was a failure of our mental health safety net. Period.

Mental health evaluation and treatment is expensive. One can't get 'cured' of problems overnight; almost all treatments I've heard of take years of therapy, and medicines, to effect a cure. Obvioulsy, from the results, Cho was not in remission for his mental health issues. From Psychiatry Online...

"....insurance is designed to pay for the treatment of sickness or injury, but not for services for people who are "suffering from life." They argued that treatment is never medically necessary for shyness or other personal enhancement, loneliness and irascibility and other temperamental characterological issues, or lack of personal satisfaction.

"Insurance underwriters have expressed fears that if greater mental health and substance abuse benefits are available, people will increase their use of these services for problems in living rather than for psychiatric disorders, thereby creating moral hazard.

Well, we had some extreme 'moral hazard' happen, and now some changes are forced. Whether cost was a factor in Cho's inabiltiy to stay in therapy, or whether the Clinic couldn't or wouldn't justify seeing him frequently enough due to understaffing, or no money from Cho, the fact remains that inadequate care was provided, as proved by the results of Tuesday's tragedy. More...

"The most adverse cost impact of implementing the current concept of medical necessity comes from its lack of recognition of the need for continuing treatment even when signs and symptoms of a mental or substance use disorder are not present. This lack is particularly true for long-term conditions that may be in remission but for which ongoing treatment is necessary to avoid more intensive levels of care in the future. Certain personality disorders and severe and persistent mental illness are examples."

So, what obstacles do we have to overcome, to get some proper care for seriously mentally ill people? From an Op-Ed, (h/t Dr. Helen) in the WSJ, entitled "Why Deinstitutionalization Turned Deadly", we see some of the usual suspects:

Lawsuits brought by the American Civil Liberties Union and Washington-based Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law have changed most states’ criteria for outpatient commitment. Individuals must be classified as an imminent danger to themselves or others before they can be involuntarily treated, either in the hospital or in the community; this criterion is strictly applied. Most psychotic individuals, who are merely making threats against others or living on the streets and eating out of garbage cans, are not deemed legally sick enough to qualify for outpatient commitment.

Well, not the first time the ACLU has shown itself counter-productive to intelligent thinking. We've seen 'Mental Institutions' practically disappear, on the heels of lawsuits, so where do these people who need help go? To the State? Well, no...

At the same time as civil liberties lawyers have been making it virtually impossible to treat severely mentally ill individuals involuntarily until they commit some horrific act, state mental health officials have been increasingly abdicating their responsibility for these individuals. More than 90 % of state psychiatric hospital beds that existed in 1960 have been eliminated.

Now, at this time, after the tradgedy, we have to do something. Again, from the article above (written in 1998, mind you) we find possible solutions:

If we hope to stem this tide of unnecessary violence and preventable tragedies, we will have to address squarely the issue of involuntary treatment. Outpatient commitments, conservatorships, and conditional hospital releases should be used much more widely to ensure that discharged patients comply with the requirement that they take their medication.

So be it. Let's get busy, shall we, and make some changes, without and before the US Congress starts whipping it's usual Straw Man.
