A rare sideways tornado was captured on video as it spun off of a massive twister that roared through downtown Tuscaloosa, Ala., yesterday (April 27).
Just how rare are these sideways spinners?
"There's not even a settled-upon name for those," said Bob Henson, a meteorologist with the National Corporation for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo.
In the video, horizontal, rope-like funnel clouds periodically twist off of the main funnel cloud. At 1:20 in the video, a large sideways funnel cloud forms in front of the twister.
Sideways funnel clouds are usually seen only with the biggest and baddest of tornadoes, and yesterday was no exception, Henson told OurAmazingPlanet. The huge tornado may have carved a path from downtown Tuscaloosa to downtown Birmingham, about 60 miles (97 kilometers) apart. The tornado appears to be a mile wide and seemed to be on the ground for more than two hours.
The exact death toll from this monster is unknown, but statewide, tornadoes killed an estimated 162 people, CNN reported.

The Kinglake region, about 80km north of Melbourne, has been the worst hit - 550 homes have been razed and 55 deaths had been reported in the area as of last night as the 120,000ha inferno, known as the Kinglake Complex, gave locals little chance.Unimaginable, to be chased and caught by a firestorm.
According to residents, much of the town of Kinglake, which suffered 10 deaths, has been destroyed and nearby Marysville was wiped off the map as the fireball showed no mercy on a fearful Saturday night and early Sunday morning.
"It was a most horrible day. It's going to look like Hiroshima, I tell you, it's going to look like a nuclear bomb. There are animals dead all over the road," Kinglake resident Dr Chris Harvey said.
Six of the victims were in one car trying to outrun the inferno in Kinglake. Dr Harvey said the town was littered with burnt-out cars and he believed many contained bodies.

Entire villages in the Irrawaddy delta were still submerged from Saturday's storm, and bloated corpses could be seen stuck in the mangroves. Some survivors stripped clothes off the dead. People wailed as they described the horror of the torrent swept ashore by the cyclone.

In October 2007, CNN Meteorologist Rob Marciano disputed Gore’s claim that there is a strong correlation between intense storms and global warming. He explained that “global warming does not conclusively cause stronger hurricanes like we've seen,” pointing out that “by the end of this century we might get about a 5-percent increase.”Al, the real inconvenient truth is that you are an asshat.
I really hope the Democrat's Superdelegate daddies select Al Gore to run this year. Because the only way to get this arrogant prick to STFU is another humiliating Presidential defeat.

11-month-old boy survives killer tornado. Also, a picture of a cross...

After all the terrible news from yesterday morning's tornado destruction swath through northern and western Tennessee, we hear of an 11-month old child who was deposited, unharmed, in a field. Completely safe, already released from the hospital to his father and grandparents, but
"The child's mother Kerri Stowell, 23, of Castalian Springs died in the storm....Other people the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency said died in the storm from Sumner County were: Ramona A. Justice, 52, of Bethpage; Roger L. Perry, 57, of Castalian Springs; Dallas Warner, 33, of Castalian Springs and Lawrence Lampkin, 63, of Castalian Springs."From the NCP, this photo, and the news that the tornado in Macon county (where 12 people lost their lives) stayed on the ground for 25 miles. That's very unusual for this area; a couple years ago one 'skipped' over my neighborhood, having touched down before and after. I still had to replace my roof.
As of late yesterday, the confirmed death toll for the entire state was 31 with one person still unaccounted for. Nearly 150 people have reported injuries across the state.Scary and unpredictable, especially those that come in the dark of night.

California Burning: Arson, Politics, Ignorance gain upper hand

Yesterday the Malibu blazes subsided, others did not. The Santa Ana winds eased, so the fires are starting to become controllable.
What isn't controllable are stupid politicians. Harry Reid jumped in, quickly blaming Global Warming for these fires. Then, within six minutes, denied what he'd said.
An arsonist was shot and killed by police; another arrested. Are these ecoterrorists or just evil people?

One thing for sure, this isn't Global 'Warming'. The winds will blow, tinder will burn. Carlin is right about that.
