We did it in the '80's. We killed an old satellite in low earth orbit, using an ASAT weapon.

Since then we've declared "freedom of action in space", a policy authorized by Pres. Bush in August 2006 to "deter others from either impeding those rights or developing capabilities intended to do so."

So what do the Chinese do? Of course, they take the bait.

"China last week successfully used a missile to destroy an orbiting satellite, U.S. government officials told CNN on Thursday, in a test that could undermine relations with the West and pose a threat to satellites important to the U.S. military.

I guess the spectacle of being told "NO!" by the mighty USA had the opposite effect, huh?

I can understand the Chinese reaction. Why in the world should they kowtow to what WE tell them to do? If we have the 'rights' and 'capabilities' to blast satellites into orbit, and to blast their GPS satellites out of orbit, what and who says that the US is the only entity capable of doing so?

Of course it would be nice to be the only country with this technology, and not have to worry about anyone else (other than the old Soviet remnants) taking out satellites, so our GPS satellites and 'other' spy equipment will be unimpeded if the Chinese decide to take back Taiwan, or whereever else they decide to go (on the tab of the American WalMart shopper).

It's just not right that we can put out a 'policy directive' and expect everyone else on the planet (or off of it) to humbly and graciously kowtow to our wishes.

Hmmph...if it were the US and someone tried to impose such an impediment on our capabilities, then wouldn't we respond the same way?

Now, we have to 'protect' our low orbiting satellites.
