(Just kidding! I prefer the electric collar shock treatment, of course!)

CHART OF THE DAY: The End Of Newspapers, 'fixed' today.

I certainly won't miss that nassty old gray lady, when she finally dissolves in a bucket of warm hydrogen hydroxide.

From The Business Insider...
It's now official: The country has lost more jobs as a percentage of peak employment than any time since the Great Depression.

This includes the recessions of the early 1980s, even when they are combined.

Those looking for a v-shaped recovery keep insisting that jobs will come roaring right back, the way they did in the 1948 recession (see the blue line in the chart from Calculated Risk below).

Anything's possible, but this seems unlikely.  In 1948, U.S. consumers were not still saddled with the massive debts that are stifling consumption today.  And consumers still represent 70%+ of spending.

The other interesting point with respect to the 1948 "V" is that we have now gone as many months from the peak as it took employment to recover in full in the 1948 recession.  And we're still losing jobs.

Most importantly, regardless of what the jobs recovery eventually looks like, it hasn't started yet.  The economy is still losing 250,000+ jobs a month.  The average workweek, which should be the first indicator to turn up, also fell in August to match its record low.  This would not seem to be consistent with a sustained, v-shaped recovery.
CHANGE, baby.

Take advantage of this crisis, bitch.

From The Big Picture blog, this chart on the S&P 500's 90% decline in earnings. Blogger Barry Ritholtz displays this chart (well, not this chart, exactly, but one very similar to it!) that he received in a newsletter sent out by Chart of the Day (who knew there was such a thing?).

Profits seem to have fled the country.

Can you blame 'em?
h/t commenter happyfeet on Jeff G's post “Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade scheme will wreck U.S. economy”. happyfeet expounds...
This is the economic environment our dipshit pezzydent wants to implement his dipshit cap and trade scheme what Mr. Soros told him he wanted. Barack could gaze and gaze at this chart and never never understand. Because he’s a stupid dirty socialist hungarian muppet what is lead around by a teleprompter attached to his nuts.
Now that's a comment. A shame our leftest commentators don't have the humor and wit it takes to expound thusly. happyfeet rawks~!

Insty points to this post at Maenianum Secundum, "Hemorrhaging Federal Receipts", where Herself writes...
In September 2008, many people saw the writing on the wall, and began preparing for a Democratic-controlled Congress and a Democrat in the Oval Office.  Unlike the Carter dormancy period (the months leading up to his win and the months before he took the Oath of Office), business had no experience with which to forecast how a Democratic Congress and President would behave.  This time, we knew.

...

Going Galt is one way that individuals and business owners can signal their disapproval of the Federal government’s handling of the economy, and their ideas for programs/spending.  For many, however, Going Galt has not been an ideological choice, but a choice imposed on them.  Anecdotally, we can read the horror stories from people who are unemployed, or business owners who have seen their business receipts drop off the cliff, forcing them into a Galt-state.  But these are only anecdotes and don’t present an accurate picture of just how Galt the economy has become.

What we can do is look at Federal receipts.
Herself posts a few nice charts, one of which I will, ahem, enhance. This chart shows what's happening with federal receipts (our taxes paid to the feds) since Obama took office. The 'Galt Effect'.

Just lovely, no?

This next chart I saved on my desktop last month, from somewhere, but it fits in very nicely with this post...

Yes, that's what we're looking at. Note that these are just projected deficits; if the Galt Effect steepens, then less Federal money means more deficit.

Raise taxes, you proggressives would say? Why, that might make things worse. Remember, when Reagan lowered taxes, federal receipts went up. But with this lefty liberal proggtard in office, we are pushing 'catch-up', kid in a candy store social programs with the end result being the punishing of businesses. New taxes won't help.

The solution is (sorry, libs) to cut, cut, cut federal spending, including those out-of-control social programs. We may as well forget about Universal Health Care at this time. While we're wishing upon a star, we might as well wish for term limits on all of those serving in public offices; restoring State's rights to constitutional levels; and getting rid of tenure in our schools and universities. And, the lawyers; a few less of those wouldn't hurt either. )

UPDATED 6/4/07 5:30AM (yes, an early riser)

Dan Collins picked up the Photochop; displayed now at Protein Wisdom. Hope the Photobucket account doesn't explode... ;D

UPDATED 6/3/07 10:17 pm
The debate's over, the analysis begins. Dan Collins at Protein Wisdom had this great idea...and CNN was bragging overmuch on this 'Clock', so...

enjoy~!

6:00 PM
I'm watching this thing because I'm still rehabbing my torn calf muscle. So, this little experiment in live blogging..

CNN, Wolf Blitzer. Edwards (Breck Girl) has the coif. Kucinich looks a little like Mickey Mouse.

Sen. Obama: Questioned on FBI's terror arrest. Any credit for Bush? Obama: NO. Bush caused the terrorist threat to America, we have to get out of Iraq, because all the bad guys are limited to Afghanistan! Effort in Iraq has weakened our strategy against Terrorism.

Edwards: Bumper sticker question. Is War on Terror a bumper sticker slogan? Edwards:
NO! Bush is a bumper sticker, and should be

CLINTON: Disagrees with Edwards! We are safer than we were!

Patriot Act: Kuchinich? Patriot act undermines Patriot Act! Unconstitutional! We were led down a culdesac by 9/11!

Biden: Iraq question, voted to continue funding. Why did others vote againt it? Biden says we were lied to by Bush! Truth is, 160K forces in harm's way, we need to put in different armored vehicles. Needs 2,500 of them in the field...He doesn't want to "judge them" the others for voting against the funding. Good for him!

CLINTON: What about the funding? Bash Bush for not changing course! Support the troops by bringing them home. We all want to end the war.

OBAMA:
Everyone supports the troops. We just don't like the plan. (Compares war to Korea...not Vietnam. What's he hiding?)

EDWARDS (Breck Girl): We gotta end the war, defund the war with a timetable, (Damn he sounds like a sissy). Criticises vote on the floor, Clinton and Obama, for not declaring their votes early! Snap, crackle, pop...OBAMA: You're 4.5 years late on this! All of us excercised our best judgement...CLINTON: THIS is BUSH's WAR! All we want to do is end it (well, as politically expeditiously as possible...) 3 step plan to end the war. We Dems have Minor differences. EDWARDS: They eventually voted the right way, but it took them too long!

SEN DODD: Failed policy, civil war, less safe, less secure, bring it to a close! Certain date to end or withdraw funding. This guy is animated.

Richardson: Stone Face (nothing wrong with that) What is the moral responsibility we have in Iraq? Civil war, sectarian Conflict, We needa resoulution under article 1 to End the War, no residual forces. Darfur, Genocide? Keep troops in Kuwait, and Afgan, but GET OUT of IRAQ (waves white surrender flag....)

Sen Gravel (sent out for coffee): Four people here full of crap; it's Democratic war too. Dominoes falling, Vietnam if we leave. Hey, this guy is good!

Emailed Questions: was the Iraq mission worth it?
KUCHINICH: War based on lies! War was Wrong! We were screwed by Bush! Stop the Funding! Teachable moment: Dems were in charge, Dems were put in charge by the PEOPLE to stop the war, let's End The WAR!

BIDEN: We have 50 votes in teh Senate, we can't win the war without a Democratic President! We need 67 votes in the Senate! With our vote, we are funding the safety of our troops!

CLINTON: Did you feel regret for not reading the document you voted for? Jeez, what a faceful of crap. Saddam Hussein, WMD's, didnt' count on Pres's intention to pull the UN inspectors...

EDWARDS: I wannahit the mute button. What a... " I should have never have voted for this war" Given the dishonesty to the country, we have to re establish trust...Where's the HOOK!

OBAMA: Disqualify voters for the war from Presidency? Huh? I like that, must have heard it wrong...Hillary looks scared of Obama. Or is that a snake vs. a mongoose look?

Sen Gravel: (Back from bathroom) These people knew there were 2 sets of intelligence; we've killed more Americans than 9/11 did; yank Hillary from the stage~!\

CLINTON: Where were the inspectors? I expected them to stop Bush! He misused my vote!

Immigration Bill:
Richardson:
Supports 12 M Illegals amnesty. New Mexico is a Border State; would not support legislation building a wall or breaking up families. This bill is sensible. Boy, that flies in the face of American Sentiment! Not an amnesty: learn english, touchback provision, 13-year process for legalization. This bill separates families!
Well, they broke the law together; let them go back, together.

Biden: No 700 mile fence. Truth to power: how much to round up 12 M people, and send them back? Earned citizenship. Is this guy the new Perot? I expect to see a chart any minute...

Obamba: Build a fence with Canada? Lawyer with TB, is a problem. Strengthen Border Patrol Agent's intelligence..(!) He agrees with ' pathway to legalization' bill. Gotta stop the bleeding, though...

Raise your hand if you care! English Official? yes, Sen Gravel. Applause! Speak English! Obama argues...how can we do that? It's a distraction. Clinton: Official, not national? But we wouldn't have translators! She voted the national, not official, language.
Dodd: We need more language training. Not just English. POINT! He used ' diversity'...

Edwards's Questioner is another...hmmmph. Health care question. These girls will talk all night! Our healthcare system is dysfunctional. I have a universal plan! My plan eliminates Bush's Tax Cuts! I will cover everyone!
Obama: response to Edward's cut that his plan isn't universal. John thinks mandantory insurance is required; he wants to take on the insurance and drug companies to drive down the costs. Try for affordable insurance.
Clinton: She's thrilled it's back on the agenda! I was scarred for life, in '92, when my plan was thrown out the door! I sulked for years, and kicked the maids! We have to be ready for attacks from the ins and drug cos. What a mop...wants other issues as well as Health Care. POINT! Environmental Issues mentioned!

Gov. Richardson: Share it all, employer, employee, state, fed, no new bureaucracy, get the congressional plan...shut up.
Dodd: 42nd in Infant Mortality, throwing numbers out like Biden. Said nothing.
Edwards: Jeez. Threshold question: universal care? Unless we have universal care, some will be missed. Costs significant
Obama: Invest up front! Rural hospitals need help! And computers! Mandantory Insurance in CA (auto) doesn't work...some can't afford it. Require it!
Biden: There's only 1 way, singlepayer, HR676, the rest of the senators aren't tough enough...

Gays and Lesbians in military? Don't ask, don't tell, policy ok?
Clinton: Transition policy, not the best way, discriminatory, flood of discharges after Gulf War, the policy sucks...we need to change it. Judge on policy, not on...whatever. Defends Bill: Important First Step. Political process, checks and balances, compromise policy...
Biden: Peter Pace is wrong. Noone cares inthe foxholes. Brits, French, all gay, no problem. This isn't a rational policy.
Hands UP! All agree; policy wrong. Richardson: would move in Congress for Hate crimes law, domestic partnerships, gay marriage laws OK. No lecture on Sexual Orientation!

Civil Unions (applause) Time to allow full marriage?
Edwards (of course) Fed Gov't can't tell states or Churches what to bless. Stand up against intolerance, but don't expect President to legislate...lost his time. Good.

Would you use Clinton? (Bill)

Gravel: Be careful with Bill. Didn't stand up enough to DADT.
Ricahrdson: Ideal job, Secy Gen UN; Ambassadorship, or Peace Envoy in Mid East. That won'twork; those pesky veils cover too much...
Obama: Clinton is out there to foster diplomacy. Huh.
CLINTON: How you would use your Husband? Not as a lover, obviously...

Repair the damage of the last 8 years; Clinton sent out as a roving ambassador to the World, stop the Alienation (she said HIV! Did she check?)

GAS PRICES:

Dodd: Global Warming, Dependency, profound problem. Work on Global Warming, reduce fossil fuels, fix the world~!~ 50MPG vehicle standard, Carbon Tax. Dodged the question! Was caught! Reduce profit on a barrel of OIL, back to dependency...
Gravel: Carbon Tax, raise price of Gas. Do nothing about cost of Gas. Stop fighting the War! Bush's fault GAs is high!
Edwards: Oil and Gas companys tooo profitible. Investigate by Justice Dept. Antitrust laws, clean air laws, stop spending 3B a year on subsidizing gas and oil comapnies!

Gouging?
Richardson
: Renewable Pimping. More investigation, but they aren't gouging. Ask every American to sacrifice and conserve. Agressive plan to 80% reduction...stfu
Biden: Take away 6B subsidies; investigate price gouging; significantly mandate high mileage stuff.

Whew...break time...
Hey, I'm done here. Maybe. Publish. Ignore the errors in typing; I'm no stenographer...
