Aid is being pledged and assembled, but beyond the usual government assistance and large organizations like the Red Cross, there’s a myriad of smaller charities, many who already have a presence in Haiti.

This could very easily have been any US city that is on a fault line. Southern California, San Francisco, Memphis. Natural disasters aren't really selective of a particular region or culture.
