The debate transcript, here. Emboldenings mine.
MCCAIN: Yes, real quick. Mr. Ayers, I don't care about an old washed-up terrorist. But as Senator Clinton said in her debates with you, we need to know the full extent of that relationship.
We need to know the full extent of Senator Obama's relationship with ACORN, who is now on the verge of maybe perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history in this country, maybe destroying the fabric of democracy. The same front outfit organization that your campaign gave $832,000 for "lighting and site selection." So all of these things need to be examined, of course.
Those lines should have given uninformed Americans (yes, there are plenty of Americans who have no idea who Ayers or Wright are or what ACORN means...American Idol, the Obama edition, is playing large and firm at the dumbstream media center nearest their frightened hearts) pause and opened new avenues of questions to Mr. Obama. But he shook those lines off. No Shame.
John McCain made a star of Joe Wurzelbacher, the most famous plumber in America today.
MCCAIN: No. I would like to mention that a couple days ago Senator Obama was out in Ohio and he had an encounter with a guy who's a plumber, his name is Joe Wurzelbacher.
Joe wants to buy the business that he has been in for all of these years, worked 10, 12 hours a day. And he wanted to buy the business but he looked at your tax plan and he saw that he was going to pay much higher taxes.
You were going to put him in a higher tax bracket which was going to increase his taxes, which was going to cause him not to be able to employ people, which Joe was trying to realize the American dream.
Now Senator Obama talks about the very, very rich. Joe, I want to tell you, I'll not only help you buy that business that you worked your whole life for and be able -- and I'll keep your taxes low and I'll provide available and affordable health care for you and your employees.
And I will not have -- I will not stand for a tax increase on small business income.
Later, after Obama stated he 'didn't mind paying a little more' in taxes (John should've jumped on that remark with the line 'well, Senator Obama, you can certainly offer more tax money if you so desire, no one's stopping you; but we know you would rather tax those who actually produce things in America, those who give jobs and paychecks to Americans, than those like youself who would slash at the ankles of America's hardest-working providers, just to keep happy those millions attracted to your party just because you promote class warfare and seem to hate the rich ') Senator McCain came to the crux of the biscuit, punitive taxes on America's employers, and the response we should expect if and when Obama gets into office...
MCCAIN: The fact is that businesses in America today are paying the second highest tax rate of anywhere in the world. Our tax rate for business in America is 35 percent. Ireland, it's 11 percent.Where are companies going to go where they can create jobs and where they can do best in business?
We need to cut the business tax rate in America. We need to encourage business.
Now, of all times in America, we need to cut people's taxes. We need to encourage business, create jobs, not spread the wealth around.
There's plenty of American businessmen who view Obama's coming as a future plague. Where else is he to get the necessary monies to fund the new social programs and giveaways he's promised? (Did you like the way he dodged Shhieffer's direct question...
SCHIEFFER: Both of you have said you want to reduce the deficit, but the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget ran the numbers on both of your proposals and they say the cost of your proposals, even with the savings you claim can be made, each will add more than $200 billion to the deficit.Obama rattled off a 'line-by-line' promise to cut existing programs. BUT NEVER ONCE OFFERED TO CUT BACK ON ANY SPECIFIC GIVEaWAY HE'S ALREADY PROMISED.Aren't you both ignoring reality? Won't some of the programs you are proposing have to be trimmed, postponed, even eliminated?
Give us some specifics on what you're going to cut back.
Senator Obama?
More, from later, on Joe the Plumber. (Don't you love the 'spread the wealth' line?)
MCCAIN: And of course, I've been talking about the economy. Of course, I've talked to people like Joe the plumber and tell him that I'm not going to spread his wealth around. I'm going to let him keep his wealth. And of course, we're talking about positive plan of action to restore this economy and restore jobs in America. And, a mention of class warfare. John McCain flat out hammered The Tax Man in this debate!
MCCAIN: You know, when Senator Obama ended up his conversation with Joe the plumber -- we need to spread the wealth around. In other words, we're going to take Joe's money, give it to Senator Obama, and let him spread the wealth around.Excellent debate, great responses to every point and question. John McCain's straight talk on the economy should have resonated to the core of Americans who believe capitalism and the true American way.
I want Joe the plumber to spread that wealth around. You told him you wanted to spread the wealth around.
The whole premise behind Senator Obama's plans are class warfare, let's spread the wealth around. I want small businesses -- and by the way, the small businesses that we're talking about would receive an increase in their taxes right now.
Who -- why would you want to increase anybody's taxes right now? Why would you want to do that, anyone, anyone in America, when we have such a tough time, when these small business people, like Joe the plumber, are going to create jobs, unless you take that money from him and spread the wealth around.
There's nothing of that sort in Barack Hussein Obama, who trolls for votes amongst those Americans who would prefer Big Daddy Gub'mint to micromanage their lives; to promise them cradle to grave health and welfare.
Oh...my favorite line of the debate? After mentioned, time and time again, President George Bush?
MCCAIN: Yes. Senator Obama, I am not President Bush. If you wanted to run against President Bush, you should have run four years ago.
But he didn't, did he? Instead, he was still a state Senator, in Illinois, the most liberal state in the nation; from Chicago, one of the most liberal cities in the nation, a city and state that has the worst-run welfare programs and the most dreadful school system...in the nation.
Before setting out to 'CHANGE' America, Baracky, you should've stayed in Chicago and proved that you could 'CHANGE' a smaller venue first.
Failed to fix Chicago, Illinois; why should he be given an opportunity to 'fix' the rest of America?
