President Bush adopted a 'tough stance' against Israel during his visit last month, pretty much telling Ohlmert that a two-state solution was mandatory. Americans agree, it seems, for the most part; we all want stabilization in the Middle East to some degree, and that can't happen without Israel coexisting with it's neighbors with some sort of long-term harmony. A two-state solution is probably best. And Israel agrees to that, with some reservations. It's a shame the Gaza Crisis has flared up again.
Today, the hole-in-the-fence has allowed half of Gaza's population of 1.5 million to flee to Egypt. Gaza is much like a toothpaste tube, with Israel squeezing the top, putting pressure on the north side and squeezing people out into Egypt...with Hamas perhaps staying behind. Maybe the next step for Israel is to attack the Hamas element that's stayed in the strip?
Maybe this operation is designed to isolate Hamas? This ploy puts pressure on Egypt, I would think, to not reinstall the wall and force the displaced Palestinians back into their tube. Why did Egypt build the wall in the first place?
I support Israel, Zionism, and the Palestinian State. If those elements can all come together, then we will have witnessed a miracle.
George Bush, here's to hoping your legacy-building plan works...
