Las Vegas police asked prosecutors Wednesday to charge NFL player Adam "Pacman" Jones in connection with a strip club melee during NBA All-Star Weekend.
Detectives with the Violent Crimes Section presented their case to the district attorney's office and recommended charges of coercion, a felony, and battery and making threats to life, both misdemeanors, against the star cornerback for the Tennessee Titans, Lt. George Castro said.
Police recommended the same charges in March, but District Attorney David Roger asked detectives to dig further to ensure a "lock-tight prosecution."
In the weeks since, more people have come forward to corroborate earlier information, Castro said.
" We've gone back and done our homework and cleaned up a few things," he said, adding that he did not expect a decision from prosecutors until next week at the earliest.
Detectives were still investigating the shooting that took place shortly after a Feb. 19 brawl in the Minxx strip club, 4636 Wynn Road, near Tropicana Avenue and Valley View Boulevard. The shooting left bouncer Tom Urbanski paralyzed from the waist down.In today's NCP, one of Jones' attorneys, Manny Arora, opined this...
The melee inside the club started about 4 a.m. after Cornelius Haynes Jr., better known as rapper Nelly, and Jones tossed hundreds of dollars of cash into the air and on stage for a visual effect known as "making it rain." When some strippers started picking up the cash, Jones became irate and started fighting with bouncers, police said.
Bouncers broke up the fight and cleared the club. A short time later, a gunman walked to the front of the business and opened fire toward the door, hitting Urbanski, fellow bouncer Aaron Cudworth and a woman.
Minxx co-owner Robert Susnar has said the gunman and Jones entered the club together and sat next to each other. Jones also threatened to kill Cudworth after they scuffled during the brawl, he said.
Investigators have found no information linking Jones to the shooter, Castro said.
Jones’ attorney Manny Arora went on the offensive against what he perceived to be grandstanding on the part of the police department. That's fair. What comes out of Vegas' PD should be above board, and 'leaks' from evidence collection shouldn't be part of it. Even if the evidence is favorable to Jones. This is one of the few instances I've heard of when the defending attorney is pissed because of evidence leaked that helped his client. Just shows the level of frustration they are in...what with a moron for a client, who is obvioulsy talented, but seems to have cinder block brain syndrome...nothing can get in there, no matter how many good people have tried to help him.
“This is the second time that the police department has gone public with this case,” Arora said. “I have a problem with that. You have not heard us go public with any of the facts in this case for the simple fact that you don’t want to taint a potential jury pool in case it goes to trial.
“The fact that the police are doing this is both disturbing and unprofessional. They have a right to say what they want to say, but they’re supposed to be looking for the truth and not seeking their 15 minutes [of fame].”
Jones' microencephalic hat-balancer notwithstanding, he does deserve this to either go to court or not, and in a timely fashion. Did he or didn't he know the shooter? Witnesses had the unknown shooter sitting next to Pac at his table.Arora continues his lawyerly rant:
“First, there is supposedly a videotape from inside the club,” Arora said. “Adam has a fairly unique hairstyle, so I suppose it would be fairly easy to recognize someone fitting that hairstyle on the surveillance tape, no matter how grainy it is. If you have that, you simply play the tape and rest your case. He's right about that. We need to know who that slice of worthless humanity is, and whether or not Pacman was an associate. If Pac isn't, then let's get this over with. If he is, and is sheltering the guy for whatever reason (even keeping his identity quiet, if Pac knows him, shows that 'hood mentality of not ratting out your buddies is still at large in Pac's small brain) then that sheltering is damning in itself. You can't keep such things quiet, when a man is sitting in a wheelchair paralyzed.
“Second, there was the DNA that they flew all the way to Atlanta to collect that was not a match, so now that’s out the window.
“Finally, we haven’t heard word one about the shooter. All we’ve heard is about this famous player who might have started a fight or something. This has been going on for nearly five months. That’s a lot of time and investigation to potentially make a misdemeanor charge stick.”
...“Thus far, they are not close to catching anybody or having any leads regarding the shooter, and that’s what’s disheartening,”
That's the thing that really bugs me, and is something that should haunt Pac for the rest of his life. When a stupid, stupid prank turns sour, and it's all your fault...
