A little conversation-talk I had today, with a limo driver, taking me from Chicago's south side (Midway Airport) to DesPlaines, late this afternoon...
Me: "So, what's the population of the Chicagoland area, now?"
Driver: "We have 11 million in the area." [actual Metro Chicago area population is around 9.4 million souls, most seeming to be on the roadway at any given time]
(I wanted to draw this one in, so I fed him some bait)
Me: "I understand Baghdad has around 25 million." [actually, Iraq has about 27 million; Baghdad has around 9.5 million, give or take a few Iranians and some down-on-their-luck Pakis]
That's all it took. I listened and made a couple of sympathetic noises, but here's the gist of this fellow's rant:
Driver: "Baghdad has 25 million, and Bush thought he could go over there and get anything done. He went over there and got 3,000 killed, over 10,000 wounded, not to mention all of the Iraqis dead and wounded, for nothing! Bush, he should be impeached and tried, for the war. Saddam was bad, but Bush is worse! Clinton lied, but didn't get anyone killed. Bush lied, and people died. Clinton got impeached for getting his d**k sucked, and Bush should be impeached too! He wakes up every day, President, and has this ego. A stupid man with an ego, and he gets us in this mess!"
By now, that ghost silver Lincoln Limo was speeding down I-55, tailgating, and I had heard enough.
Me: "So, you've followed the NFL Draft?"
Driver: "No, no time for the futball draft. I follow cars."
Hmmmph.
This limodriver has the entire Democratic 'Bush Hate' talking points agenda down pat. He didn't feel bad at all in unleashing the entire load of Dhimmi 'logic' to a stranger, without even batting his eye, and obviously he hadn't heard any disagreement for many moons or miles. It's no wonder that Bush's approval rating is at 28%, there is no effective counter to the massive liturgy that's flooding the media. As there is no questioning of the information coming to this driver's ears (he will probably add that '25 million' Baghdad Population error to his spiel, now, without wondering how correct it is), there is an overwhelming attitude now amongst 72% of the population that Iraq is unwinnable, and Bush is responsible, criminally so, for his (and our) failure to get the job done.
Nevermind the strategic advantage of holding Iraq, or the removal of the Saddam-and-family death machine, or the worth of fighting Al Qaeda in Iraq (and Afghanistan) where we at least have an advantage in location. Errors were made, with our failure to understand suicide attacks, truck bombs and IED's (the Guerilla Warfare meme hasn't crept into the hallowed halls of West Pointe?)
So, no matter what use or value the 'Surge' will have, we've lost the war...here at home, in the media, and in public opinion. It must be time to bring the boys home, because the sentiment against Bush is just a membrane thickness away from a backlash against the troops.
