UPDATE 12/28/06 9:30 PM CST Saddam Hung
Reported at 9:20 PM, Saddam has assumed room temperature. Now THAT's the way capital punishment is supposed to work! Take heed, Liberals, ACLU. To make punishment effective, it must be carried out swiftly.
BAGHDAD, Iraq — Saddam Hussein, the former president of Iraq, was executed by hanging shortly before dawn on Saturday in Iraq, Arab media outlets reported.

UPDATE 12/28/06 11:45 AM Saddam turned over to Iraqis
AP is reporting that Saddam has been turned over to the Iraqis. He met with his half-brothers earlier and gave up his last will and testament. There's no indication of when the actual execution will happen, but it's expected to go down very soon...Unless the Iraqis do something dumb and get him snatched away from custody, Saddam Hussein will be toasting soon enough.
"A few minutes ago we received correspondence from the Americans saying that President Saddam Hussein is no longer under the control of U.S. forces," according to the statement faxed to The Associated Press.
"Saddam will be executed today or tomorrow," said Munir Haddad, a judge on the appeals court that upheld Saddam's death sentence. "All the measures have been done."
Haddad is authorized to attend the execution on behalf of the judiciary.
"I am ready to attend and there is no reason for delays," Haddad said.
We could learn a thing or two, here in America, about the processes that delay the death penalty (ACLU). While this is more politically charged that your ordinary dumbass street killer's execution, still we should find a way to get 'er done a little quicker...
UPDATE 12/28/06 9:15 PM Saddam to hang within 24 Hours?
Fox News is reporting that Saddam Hussein might hang before the New Year. There are no more legal hurdles to overcome. I believe that Saddam is resigned to his fate, and even urged his countrymen to not hate the forces that occupy Iraq. But, before we start to feel sorry for Saddam, we must remember the reason he deserves the gallows:
Despite his calls for conciliation among Iraqis, Saddam's legacy is brutal. He put suspected foes to death without trial, oppressed Kurds and Shiites, waged war on Iran and twice fought U.S.-led armies. He left an impoverished nation now gripped by sectarian bloodshed and an insurgency against the U.S. presence.If he had only used his considerable influence in the Middle East in a constructive way...his path was one of violence and opression. His sons were devil incarnate; you can see his lack of proper thinking in the way his sons were raised. Fate brought them to their ends before he will meet his; in a normally-wired parent, the loss of his sons would be punishment enough.
Here's an excerpt of Saddam's letter, written Nov. 5, the day he was sentenced to death:
To the great nation, to the people of our country, and humanity,
Many of you have known the writer of this letter to be faithful, honest, caring for others, wise, of sound judgment, just, decisive, careful with the wealth of the people and the state ... and that his heart is big enough to embrace all without discrimination.
You have known your brother and leader very well and he never bowed to the despots and, in accordance with the wishes of those who loved him, remained a sword and a banner.
This is how you want your brother, son or leader to be ... and those who will lead you (in the future) should have the same qualifications.
Here, I offer my soul to God as a sacrifice, and if He wants, He will send it to heaven with the martyrs, or, He will postpone that ... so let us be patient and depend on Him against the unjust nations.
Remember that God has enabled you to become an example of love, forgiveness and brotherly coexistence ...
I call on you not to hate because hate does not leave a space for a person to be fair and it makes you blind and closes all doors of thinking and keeps away one from balanced thinking and making the right choice ...
I also call on you not to hate the peoples of the other countries that attacked us and differentiate between the decision-makers and people ...
Anyone who repents — whether in Iraq or abroad — you must forgive him ...
You should know that among the aggressors, there are people who support your struggle against the invaders, and some of them volunteered for the legal defense of prisoners, including Saddam Hussein ...
Some of these people wept profusely when they said goodbye to me ...
Dear faithful people, I say goodbye to you, but I will be with the merciful God who helps those who take refuge in him and who will never disappoint any faithful, honest believer ... God is Great ... God is great ... Long live our nation ... Long live our great struggling people ... Long live Iraq, long live Iraq ... Long live Palestine ... Long live jihad and the mujahideen.

Additional clarification note:
I have written this letter because the lawyers told me that the so-called criminal court — established and named by the invaders — will allow the so-called defendants the chance for a last word. But that court and its chief judge did not give us the chance to say a word, and issued its verdict without explanation and read out the sentence — dictated by the invaders — without presenting the evidence. I wanted the people to know this.
Let's see: "differentiate between the decision-makers and people..." So, like everyone else in America it seems, he hates Bush. Makes me want to...like Bush more!
"Anyone who repents — whether in Iraq or abroad — you must forgive him ..." So, now he's Jesus too. Repent and...wait a minute, he forgot to ask for baptism! False Prophet! Just like Mohammed...

UPDATE 12/27/06 Ba'ath Party gets in Line...
"The Ba'ath and the resistance are determined to retaliate, with all means and everywhere, to harm America and its interests if it commits this crime," the statement added, referring to Ba'ath fighters as "the resistance."So...we defeated the Ba'athists in record time, militarily, found their leader hiding in a 'spider hole', brought him to trial, and are on the verge of executing him. After all of the 'affronts' we've afforded to the Ba'athists, only now do they decide to retailiate? With what?? They are in a long line that includes Al Qaeda, Hamas, Taliban, Liberals, and Allah knows who else...
This 'threat' level should be only a footnote to the rest of the threats we're under. Just another reason for Democrats to hide under their beds and pee their pants!
UPDATE 12/26/06 Saddam Loses Appeal
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - An Iraqi appeals court on Tuesday upheld a ruling that Saddam Hussein should hang for crimes against humanity, Iraq's national security adviser told Reuters.Under the statute governing the Iraqi High Tribunal, the death sentence must be carried out within the next 30 days.
"The appeal court has approved the death sentence. They (the government) have the right to choose the date starting from tomorrow up to 30 days. After 30 days it will be an obligation to implement the sentence," the head of the Iraqi High Tribunal, Aref Abdul-Razzaq al-Shahin, told a news conference.
Well, I know at least the Shi'ites will be happy about this. And the Kurdish segment of the Iraqi nation. Unpleased? How about Amnesty International? "Amnesty International is very disappointed about this decision," a spokeswoman said. "We are against the death penalty as a matter of principle..." Of course they are.

Yes, it's a modern-day hanging. Not an American/ACLU-designed 'death by drip after 20 years of appeals', but a real-life noose and dangle.
Why should we care about this event? Because this is the warning shot that will get the attention of the rest of the murderous dictators who run little countries with death squads. And it is further justification for the war in Iraq, that our left-wing peace-loving crowd finds so little to support.
How long will this be in appeals? Well, the appeal will be filed, a review panel will take as long as needed to check the facts (expected to take 3-4 weeks) then after that, 30 days to sentence finalization.
Side notes:
Ramsey Clark, the notorious left-wing demagogue, was told by the Judge to "Get Out"....
Before the session began, one of Saddam's lawyers, former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, was ejected from the courtroom after handing the judge a memorandum in which he called the trial a travesty.
Chief Judge Raouf Abdul-Rahman pointed to Clark and said in English, "Get out."
Hmmph...I kinda wanted him to stay where he was..
The Sunnis predicted...what else? Outrage leading to Death.
