Brown's Diner, a longtime fixture of Hillsboro Village just south of Wedgewood Ave., I decided to spend some of the company's money and check the place out for lunch. And I was suprised at the homestyle setting in such a vibrant, urbane district. You would expect a Starbucks or other 'happening' joint on this corner, but instead...

Yes, a trailer front. I was afraid my non-liberal markings would stand out, less than 1 mile from Vanderbilt and dead smack in the "cultured" part of Nashville...

..but the crowd didn't seem to be that much different from our group; in other words, we fit right in.

The place has history, for sure. The 'Aints fans gathered here for games, and may still come around, but only Titans gear adorned the walls. Notice the photo on the wall...

Daphne, our server, was steady and sure...not quick, but pleasant. Daphne replied when I inquired about wireless access, "not here, and I wish I could ban cellphones sometimes too..."

The lunchtime crowd was diverse, from blue-collar workers to tied-up cubicle dwellers...

TV's were tuned to ESPN, showing of all things, a paintball tournament.

Food was cheap and good. All in all, 2 burgers, 2 fries (suprisingly not greasy), one catfish sandwich and no complaints, three lunches for 20 bucks and $5 tip, not too shabby.

Bathroom was....thankfully, not odorous. Towels were not usable...

The place needs a pool table. I would be right at home. Without a pool table, it can't attract me except for lunch. I would prefer Gold Rail and Cue (sorry, Melrose Billiards) for an after-work beer...if you don't mind.

Next week, maybe I'll revisit another soon-to-be classic:

(this review wasn't sponsered by anybody...but there's an idea~!)
